Philipp Köker is a PhD candidate in Political Science and recipient of the SSEES Foundation Scholarship at University College London (UCL) - School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES). Before commencing his PhD research, he completed a BA (1st class) in Political Science and Public Law at the University of Mannheim (School of Social Sciences) in Germany and a MA (with distinction) in Politics, Security and Integration at UCL - SSEES. During his undergraduate studies, Philipp gained experience in research by working at the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES) in the project "Coalition Conflict and Intra-Party Politics". He also completed internships at the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) in the Polish parliament, Warsaw, and the representation of Lubelskie Region in Brussels. Since April 2011, Philipp is co-organiser of the 11th Postgraduate Conference on Central and Eastern Europe which will take place in February 2012. Before starting his studies, Philipp completed a voluntary peace service with Action Reconciliation - Service for Peace (Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste e.V.) in Lublin, Poland. Here, he worked as a tour guide at the Majdanek State Museum, a memorial museum in the place of a former German concentration camp, at the Maximilian-Kolbe-Werk, a charity taking care of former inmates of concentration camps and Gestapo-prisons, and at the Grodzka Gate - Teatr NN - a cultural centre dedicated to the rich, mulitcultural history of Lublin. During his undergraduate studies in Germany, Philipp also acted as a regional spokesperson for Action Reconciliation in Mannheim and Heidelberg. Philipp Köker is a member of the Young Leaders Forum "Europe meets Russia" at the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy (ICD) and the McKinsey Firsthand programme. He is fluent in German, English and Polish, speaks intermediate Russian and Slovak and has advanced beginner's knowledge of Dutch, French and Spanish.
